Philosophy for Children - P4C

P4C is an approach to learning that encourages pupils to think for themselves and with others.

Through P4C, children explore big ideas that arise across the curriculum and from their own life experiences. Using thoughtful discussion and enquiry, pupils develop their ability to question, reason, listen carefully, and express their ideas clearly.

This approach supports pupils in becoming confident, reflective learners who can work respectfully with others. It helps them to develop important life skills—such as critical thinking, communication, and collaboration—enabling them to learn effectively and live well together in a diverse society.

P4C strongly supports the development of oracy, the ability to speak and listen effectively, by placing discussion and dialogue at the heart of learning.

Here’s how it helps:

Developing speaking skills

P4C encourages pupils to express their thoughts clearly and confidently. Children are given regular opportunities to share ideas, explain their reasoning, and build on the views of others in a structured but open environment.

Strengthening listening skills

A key part of P4C is active listening. Pupils learn to listen carefully to different perspectives, show respect for others’ opinions, and respond thoughtfully rather than simply waiting to speak.

Building discussion and dialogue

P4C sessions are based on enquiry and group discussion. Children learn how to take turns, ask meaningful questions, challenge ideas politely, and engage in purposeful talk—key elements of effective oracy.

Encouraging reasoning and vocabulary

Through philosophical enquiry, pupils practise justifying their opinions and using more precise, subject-specific vocabulary. This deepens both their thinking and their spoken language.

Supporting confidence and collaboration

The inclusive nature of P4C helps all pupils feel valued and heard. Over time, this builds confidence in speaking, particularly for quieter children, while also promoting teamwork and respectful communication.
